From Red Cliff, CO drive south on highway 24 to the trail head then follow the track logs that follow the trail up and back to Shrine Pass. Holy Cross gets its name from a snow formation in the shape of a cross. It gets its difficult rating from many small challenging sections. The most difficult is beyond Holy Cross City.
It was raining the day we drove the trail and we did not try the last very difficult obstacles. Another challenging spot is French Creek. The creek may have a few inches of water or a few feet of water depending on the run off. It has many boulders and some of them are very large. At high water times many boulders are under water making route finding very difficult. It is very advisable to run this trail with someone who is familiar with the trial.
