Follow Breck to Breck loop track log south from Breckenridge, CO on route 9. This spectacularly beautiful loop earns its difficult rating from the Red Cone section of the trail. The decent from the summit of Red Cone requires a slow inch by inch decent. It is only dangerous if excessive speed is involved or in bad weather or with ice and snow.
This section of Red Cone is one way only on the decent. Red Cone can be bypassed to keep the trail moderate by staying on Handcart and not turning off to the right onto the Red Cone trail. Handcart meets the Red Cone trail at the base of the Red Cone decent. From there follow track logs 1, 2, 3 and 4 over a short distance on Webster and turn left to Radical Hill. Radical Hill starts easy and becomes a narrow shelf road.
The top of Radical offers a nice spot to photograph Red Cone and Webster Pass. Herds of mountain sheep are often seen in this area. Follow the track log to the decent down the Middle Fork of the Swan. The first portion of the decent is an especially scenic area. The track log ends in Breckenridge.
